Every year October 1st is celebrated as the National Day of the People’s Republic of China. This event is held in commemoration of the Central People's Government formation ceremony held on October 1, 1949 in Tiananmen Square, following the foundation of People’s Republic of China on September 21, same year. On the National day, public places in China, including Tiananmen Square are decorated in a grand manner.
Portraits of national leaders including Mao Zedong are publicly displayed as part of the festivities. People treat the consecutive seven days starting from the National day as a Golden week as this period is marked with a lot of celebrations, fireworks, long-distance travels, and extravagant sales. Apart from Mainland China, the National Day is celebrated in Macau and Hong Kong also with vigor and enthusiasm.
