Capelin is treated as the same class of salmon fishes. Capelin fishes are mostly found in the Atlantic. The ones you find in this picture are ‘Shishamo’ fishes, they belong to capelin family. In Japanese cooking, Shishamo capelin fishes are caught when they are full with roes. With this reason only female shishamos with roes are considered ideal. They are grilled or fried, and served together with the roes.
