Ingredients

For the Jackfruit

  • 1 can Chef's Choice Young Green Jackfruit in Brine
  • 1 shallot, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil, for cooking

For the BBQ Sauce

  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 4 tbsp water

To Serve

  • 2 bread rolls or burger buns
  • Your favourite salad vegetables

Method

1. Prepare the BBQ sauce

Add the smoked paprika, soy sauce, maple syrup, tomato purée, garlic, apple cider vinegar and water to a bowl.

Mix well until all the ingredients are combined. Set aside.

2. Prepare the jackfruit

Drain the jackfruit thoroughly. Using your hands, pull the jackfruit apart into thin shreds, removing any particularly tough pieces.

Set the shredded jackfruit aside.

3. Sauté the aromatics

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the minced garlic and diced shallot. Sauté for approximately 3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.

4. Cook the jackfruit

Add the shredded jackfruit to the skillet and stir well.

Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the jackfruit is heated through.

5. Add the BBQ sauce

Reduce the heat to low and pour the homemade BBQ sauce over the jackfruit.

Stir well until the jackfruit is evenly coated. Continue cooking for a few minutes, allowing the sauce to warm through and coat the jackfruit.

6. Assemble the burgers

Spoon the barbecue pulled jackfruit into toasted bread rolls or burger buns.

Add your favourite vegetables and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a more pulled texture: Pull the jackfruit into smaller shreds before cooking so it more closely resembles pulled meat.
  • Adjust the sweetness: Add a little more or less maple syrup depending on your preference.
  • Add some heat: Add chilli flakes or a little hot sauce to the BBQ sauce for a spicier burger.
  • Make it vegan: Check that your bread rolls and soy sauce are suitable for a vegan diet.
  • Serving suggestion: Try adding shredded lettuce, sliced cucumber, tomato or coleslaw for extra freshness and crunch.
